Open Data Hackathon 2024

The Open Data Hackathon 2024 is a 3-months long competition focused on leveraging Hong Kong’s open government data to create innovative solutions for urban challenges. The event brought together developers, data scientists, and designers to collaborate on projects with real-world impact.

HKSTP Techathon+ 2025

HKSTP Techathon+ is an annual flagship international intercollegiate innovation and technology event hosted by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP). It’s a platform for global innovators, particularly university students and startups, to collaborate, exchange ideas, and develop innovative solutions. The event also serves as a launchpad for startups, offering opportunities for funding and participation in incubation programs.

Competition Content: HikeTech Insights

Our team developed a comprehensive data analytics solution that transforms private and public data into actionable insights for both city planners and everyday hikers. And the project was developed into a incubator funded startup: Wanderwise.ai

Technical Implementation

• Frontend: React.js for interactive data visualizations
• Backend: Mapbox (or Google Maps) SDK, Firestore, Firebase
• Machine Learning: Trained CNNs with Hong Kong-specific wildlife and terrain data .
• Data Sources: Hong Kong Governmental Open Data and APIs, Environmental Protection Department data, BYU CS HCI Lab

Outcome and Impact

Our solution received recognition from the judging panel for its comprehensive approach and potential practical applications. The project demonstrated how data science and machine learning can be applied to improve geospatial applications and support sustainable decisions.
